Icelandics in Wales
Wales has a number of quality Icelandic horses based at
Anglesey Icelandics and at Solva Icelandics in
Pembrokeshire. Of course there are also numerous
individual owners too. With the stunning scenery, it's
not surprising that most Icelandic horse activity here
involves riding out and enjoying the countryside, as
well as breeding plenty of foals which thrive on the
green Welsh grass. On Anglesey, Kjartan Daviðsson has an
oval and pace track, and runs training courses and
competitions. He imports and breeds horses for sale. In
the South West corner of Wales, Solva Icelandics breed
quality foals and occasionally have horses for sale, as
well as running informal courses and giving displays.
The owner, Michelle Rushen, has ridden in several World
Championships and is an IHSGB judge.
One of the most famous Icelandic horses in the world -
World Champion Stefnir frá Sandhólaferju - grew up and
was trained in Wales. There are several other good
stallions in Wales at present, and some excellent brood
mares.
There are regular fun rides, and displays at shows for
Welsh IHSGB members to take part in. Hopefully an oval
and pace track will soon be built in Pembrokeshire, so
there will be another venue for competitions and more
structured courses. If you don't have your own Icelandic
yet and want to know more about the friendly Icelandic
horse scene in Wales, then please contact one of the
Welsh members who will be really happy to talk to you.
