Icelandics in Southern England
There are many Icelandics in the South of England, and
lots of activities taking place. There are three oval
tracks, one near Gatwick and two in Dorset. At Oakfield
Farm near Verwood several competitions are held each
year. Courses are held by Barry and Anita near Gatwick,
at Oakfield, and by Edda Hestar, based in Pitton near
Salisbury. Edda Hestar also run riding holidays for
people who love Icelandics. In addition, there are
plenty of social rides, including the Stonehenge Ride in
the Spring, and the Christmas Ride. There are many
smaller centres and individuals breeding Icelandics,
competing, driving and generally having fun with their
horses.
There are some excellent stallions based near Salisbury
and Blandford, and plenty of good foals are born every
year.
IHSGB members in Southern England are an active lot, and
can be seen at shows and events throughout the area
doing Icelandic horse displays and even taking part in
Viking reenactment. If you don't have your own Icelandic
yet and want to know more about the friendly Icelandic
horse scene in Southern England, then please contact one
of the IHSGB members who will be really happy to talk to
you.
