Icelandics in Scotland
There is a thriving Icelandic horse community in
Scotland. Not surprising, after all, as Icelandics first
made their mark on the United Kingdom here. Several of
the IHSGB Trustees are Scottish, and a large percentage
of members of the society live north of the border. The
main centres of activity are in the Edinburgh and
Aberdeen areas, though of course there are numerous
smaller groups and many individuals. There is a truly first class
oval and pace track belonging to
Ruth and Jim Aitken at West Tarf near Edinburgh. West
Tarf also houses Britain's only Riding for the Disabled
group to use solely Icelandic Horses, the Hestavinir
("Horse Friends") Group. There is even a trekking centre
on the Shetland Islands which uses mainly Icelandic
horses. Also some excellent horses have been bred in
Scotland, and breeding is continuing.
Many courses are held by the IHSGB, as well as
competitions (several British Championships have taken
place at West Tarf near Edinburgh), social events,
displays and fun rides. There's plenty going on for
Icelandic horse owners at all levels, and if you don't
have your own Icelandic yet and want to know more about
the friendly Icelandic horse scene in Scotland, then
please contact one of the Scottish members who will be
really happy to talk to you.
