Yo ur
Horse Live - This was the first time IHSGB had been at YHL for
quite a few years and we were all overwhelmed with the positive
response we had. It seemed like we had spoken to nearly all 20000
visitors by the end of Sunday - so a huge thanks must go to all
volunteers who helped out ! I hope your voices have held up better
than mine has. Ann Savage kindly brought her mare Dimma for the
weekend, and many people commented on how well behaved she was
especially in the excitement of the Breed Parade. Dimma proved to be
an excellent ambassador for the breed by taking everything in her
stride and being flanked by two very large breeds of horse she
proved size isn't everything ! There were many people genuinely
interested in having their own Icelandic horse, and I look forward
to seeing the people I spoke to again at an Icey meet up.

Thank you very much, everyone, who
participated in the long ride. Over the weekend Icelandic horse
riders and their friends rode the grand total of 618 miles. I hope
that you all have wonderful memories of the weekend.
Give or take a few miles this would take riders going south to north
from Lands End to Gleneagles, right in the heart of Sotland.
Gleneagles is a top destination for riders, and golfers (and
politicians - the G8 was held there a few years ago). For riders who
rather fancy the opposite direction 618 miles will take you from
romantic John o' Groats to Cheltenham, more horses, flowers - and
definitely a kinder climate.
I have received a number of pictures and snippets of stories, which
I will share with you in the next edition of Sleipnir. In the
meantime - well done everyone, horses and riders alike. Hope you
enjoyed it! And if you want to do this again, where do you fancy
going next time? Lowestoft to St David's head, the widest part of
the country? 301 miles - we can do that in one day! Or somewhere
abroad. Have your say, and I will try and organise it. Gundula.

25th Anniversary Ride – stretching the length of
the country! In 2011 IHSGB is
celebrating its 25th Anniversary, and you are invited to ride (part
of) the length of Britain. Together we can do it! The idea is that
over the weekend of 24th/25th September we saddle up, preferably
with a group of friends, and ride our favourite hack wherever you
are in the country. Afterwards we add up the total distance, and see
if we can cover the full 874 miles, (or 1.047kms) that separate
Land’s End from John o’ Groats. If 80 riders cover 10 miles over
that weekend, we are nearly there… Naturally, hand-horses qualify,
too! (Please note that you will be solely responsible for your own
ride, and that IHSGB does not carry any responsibility for your
arrangements.) And then – it would be even better, if you could
raise some sponsorship money for your planned ride. Or have a
voluntary loose cash collection at the end of the ride (together
with your picnic, of course). All moneys raised will go to IHSGB.
And to top it all – inform your local paper, or radio, and send in
all publicity you get, so that we can put together a big feature in
our Jubilee newsletter edition. Click
here for the ride
website.

The British riders at the
World Championships did very well, and Jem Adams on her stallion
Kraftur set a new high score for a Brit at the WCs, getting 6.83 in
the T1. This was in spite of riding her test in rain so heavy it
looked like someone had emptied a bucket of water over her and her
horse! For full results, visit the
WC website . Click here for some
pictures of British, and other, riders, taken by the official
photographer of the event,
Peter Niess (used with permission), and by Munich photographer

The display at the St
Davids Country Festival went very well, with 9 Icelandic horses
showing off their attributes in front of around six and a half
thousand people. They were very popular, and did a twenty minute
display every two hours on a small oval track. There was a lot of
interest from the public, and hopefully we have a few new converts.

FEIF
Youth Camp Scotland 2011 - IHSGB welcomed 31 young people from 13 different
FEIF countries to Broomlee Camp and West Tarf, West Linton. We also
had 7 country leaders accompanying the young people. Our programme
for the youngsters was packed and a lot of fun! We climbed at
Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, painted pottery / made
jewellery / made soaps / made bath bombs, played polo, experienced
vaulting on horseback, enjoyed some wonderful countryside riding,
danced at the disco, danced at the Ceilidh, learnt from Fi Pugh and
Debbie Marsden, visited Edinburgh Castle and The Royal Dick
Vet………..the list is endless! But most importantly, the kids made
friends and have a lasting impression of Scotland and the IHSGB! A
very warm and sunny Scotland I might add! There's a full write-up in
the latest Sleipnir, and also on the
FEIF website.

IHSGB incorrectly announced that "the Pleasure
Horse Society closed its books and left 40,000 passport owners in
limbo until another commercial organisation picked up the business."
This information was incorrect. The Horse Passport Agency purchased
the Pleasure Horse Society passports on 23rd December 2010 and there
was no closure of the business or owners left in limbo.

Flying
High With BYRDS! Congratulations to youth rider, Sandy Carson
and his horse, Örn for their recent achievements at BYRDS area
squadding – they have achieved the qualifying mark for ‘C’ Squad.
Sandy and Örn competed in
their first competitive dressage show at the start of the year and
have just recently completed their first ‘squadding’ event with
BYRDS where they achieved the qualifying mark for C squad. Sandy
did not let the intimidation of warming up in his group with some
smart, platted up and tall horses get to them and they rode a really
nice test together. Sandy can now wear his bronze BYRDS badge with
pride and hope that he and Örn can open a few more eyes to the grace
of Icelandic horses! Well done – a great achievement.

Edda Hestar Charity Show (click
here for photos, and
here for results) - we were able to send a total of Ł550.00 to
the school. Ł400.00 was raised by the show. Ł150.00 came to us by a
totally unexpected event. The Dressage show that was run at Janice
and Tim's place earlier this year, they donated the proceeds from
the show, proceeds from the teas and coffees and an extra donation
from Janice and Tim themselves. Thanks so much to you and to Anne
Davies for that!!! It rendered me speechless and almost brought me
to tears, it was so incredibly kind. The turnout for the show was
less than normal, which is a shame as it is such a great atmosphere,
however thanks to many of you we all had a fantastic time as well as
raising a nice sum for the children's school in Nepal. The show will
be going ahead at Easter next year. THANKS TO EVERYONE for being
there and contributing to the atmosphere, if it wasn't for everyone
who turned up we wouldn't have had such a brilliant Easter Weekend

Horse & Hound Article on UK Passports - IHSGB
Trustee's Response: DEFRA gave two weeks notice by letter to all
Passport Issuing Organisations (PIOs) such as IHSGB that it was
their intention to withdraw the right of all of the Breed Societies
and other organisations, such as BHS, to produce their own
passports. The background is that the National Equine Database (NED)
costs DEFRA a large sum of money, which in the current climate the
government wishes to offload. DEFRA have hit upon the notion that
the best way for NED to actually turn a profit would be to have it
produce all of the passports.
Our view is that the best way of saving money is to shut NED down.
However, DEFRA's other problem is that every year some PIOs go out
of business. IHSGB was able to accomodate the management of
passports when SIHA shut down.
It is with these issues in mind that IHSGB gave its response to
DEFRA. Such has been the number of objections raised, that DEFRA has
postponed the next meeting.

World Fengur Access - All
IHSGB members are entitled to free access to WorldFengur.com on the
internet. Access should happen when you join or renew your
subscription. Unfortunately this process has broken down recently.
We are now putting this right. However this has to be set up
manually, one at a time, so it may take 4 - 6 weeks before everyone
has been authorised. Members should expect to receive an email
giving them a link with an authorisation code and password. If you
do not receive any notification by the end of January or your
authorisation code does not work, contact
Mike Edwards who is
dealing with it until we get straight again.

Everyone in the Wales
area is invited to meet up at Mandy & Smari's place near
Carmarthen for a meeting to discuss what you would like to see
happening here for Icelandics (and of course anyone else is welcome
too!). It will take place on December 4th, the same day as the
Christmas ride, at approximately 4pm. Please let me know if you are
coming. Mic Rushen.

Following on from
the AGM and discussions with people from Wilts/Somerset I am happy
to start a regional group for this area. If people in neighbouring
counties wish to join our activities you will be more than welcome!
I plan on organising social get togethers, rides, clinics and some
sort of competition like the one that is held at Etal. The first
thing planned is a pub meal so we can all meet up and I can gauge
how much interest there is and what people would like to do. If you
would like to join please contact me,
Charlotte Curtis.

FEIF Youth Cup 2010 – Denmark - The Youth team from Great
Britain: Fiona (16), Kay (15), Robyn (14) & Sandy (14) had a
wonderful full week in Denmark, with great weather and lots of fun.
The riders enjoyed 3 days of training, including Tölt training, Gait
training, Dressage, Cross Country, Trail riding, Horse welfare and
theory. Following on from the training, we enjoyed a fun day
out at theme park, with scary rollercoaster rides and water slides
galore!
After all that training and fun, the
competition began. All four riders competed in the T7, with
Fiona qualifying for the B final. Fiona and Depla went on to
be placed 9th
overall in the B final – a huge congratulations to Fiona for this
achievement. Kay and Sandy competed in the V4 four gait and Robyn
and Fiona in the V2 four gait: some great performances from all 4
riders. Kay competed in the Trail riding and managed the tricky
course well. Sandy, Robyn and Fiona all competed in the Cross
Country with Fiona and Depla finishing in an impressive 5th
overall. Sandy came home with 2 medals, silver for his team test and
a bronze for his International team.
The Youth Cup was a big experience for our
young riders and they had a lot to learn whilst there – but they all
came home very positive and were a credit to us all. Well done
to all 4 of our riders.

*Judge training at the
British Championships*
Trainee judges are invited to participate in judge training at
the side of the track at this year’s British Championships. FEIF
International judge, Arielle Withaar, has offered to give training
during some classes throughout the competition. This is an excellent
opportunity for our trainee judges to gain some practical experience
Judges are also invited to take the opportunity of writing for the
judges during the competition. This is a very interesting job and
one of the best ways to develop an eye for what the judges are
looking for. If you are interested in taking either (or both) of
these opportunities please contact Fi (fi@oldhillsicelandics.co.uk)
for more details.
