Studbook “How to” Guide (click here to download as a .pdf file) Introduction This guide has been produced to help members understand how our studbook works and the important procedures that need to be followed to ensure the accuracy of the data. These procedures are compliant with the EU and UK legislation on Horse Registration and Identification; they are also compliant with the requirements of FEIF (the international umbrella organisation for Icelandic Horse organisations). Without these processes we would quickly loose the necessary traceability of our horses back to Iceland, and the proof of being pure-bred. 1. Transfer of Ownership: Seller Ø Download Transfer of Ownership form from IHSGB website. Ø Sign top half and give it AND the passport to new owner. Buyer – WITHIN 28 DAYS Ø Sign bottom half of form Ø Send form AND the passport AND £10 payable to IHSGB Ltd to the Studbook Office. 2. Death of a horse: Send the horse's passport to the Studbook Office. The rescinded passport may be returned to you, on request.
3. Importing horse that has a passport: WITHIN 28 Days Ø Download “Application for Registration of an Icelandic Horse” from the website Ø Complete application form and send it AND the passport AND £10 payable to IHSGB Ltd to the Studbook Office. 4. Importing a horse that does not have a passport: WITHIN 28 days Ø Download “Application for Registration of an Icelandic Horse” from the website Ø Complete the application form and send it AND a copy of pedigree certificate, microchip AND £30 payable to IHSGB Ltd to the Studbook Office. Ø An IHSGB passport will be issued within 28 days of receipt, unless the Studbook Office makes contact with regard to any problem.
5. Stallion Owners: You will be sent a stallion serving record , if you have a male horse that is at least 2 years old and registered as entire. BY END OF CALENDAR YEAR 2008 Ø Return the Stallion Serving Record to the Studbook Office – even if the horse has not served any mares. You will see a section asking you to confirm that the horse is entire or gelded. Ø A Vetting Certificate (available from the Studbook Office or on-line from the website) issued by a Veterinary Surgeon qualified to practice in the United Kingdom must be lodged with the IHSGB Studbook Office. This must certify that the stallion does not suffer from any congenital defect, which is likely to affect the performance by that horse of basic functions such as sight, mastication, support, locomotion and reproduction. This should be completed prior to first covering and MUST be submitted prior to registration of any progeny. Ø All stallions born in the year 2003 and thereafter, must have proof of parentage by DNA analysis. Samples of DNA material of DNA material must be obtained from colt, father and mother. This sample must be forwarded to the Studbook Office, not later than the end of the calendar year of first service, together with a fee of £50 per sample. The Studbook Officer shall arrange for a laboratory test and report. A Copy of the DNA profile will be returned to the stallion owner and a copy kept for Society records. Note: All stallions presented at FEIF International Breeding Assessments must have proof of parentage, not just a completed DNA profile. In addition all stallions are required to have full hock X-rays taken and assessed by a person or laboratory approved by IHSGB, prior to assessment. 6. Registration of a Foal born 2008: The Stallion Owner must give the Mare owner a “Serving and Foaling Certificate”. The Stallion Owner signs the top bit to certify the serving and the date of serving. The Mare Owner will be sent a bag for a hair DNA sample from the foal (and an additional bag for the mother if not previously collected) MARE OWNER: WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF BIRTH OR END OF THE CALENDAR YEAR, WHICHEVER IS THE LATER. Ø Fill in the remainder of the Serving and Foaling Certificate. Ø Arrange for A VET to fill in the horse registration description page and microchip the foal. The description page must have a minimum of 3 whorls plus any significant marking, such as a star, and any colour variations e.g. skewbald. Ø Ask the VET to put a bar code of the microchip on the description page. Ø Ask the VET to take the hair from the foal and place in the DNA sample bag. The VET must sign the sample bag as evidence of identity. Ø Send the completed Serving and Foaling Certificate AND £30 payable to IHSGB Ltd AND the DNA Sample bags to the Studbook Office. Ø Ø An IHSGB passport will be issued within 28 days of receipt, unless the Studbook Office makes contact with regard to any problem. Please Note: If ALL of the above requirements are not met on time a premium fee will be charged at registration. A proportion of this fee will be returned upon completion of all requirements. The Trustees will set and advise the premium fee yearly.
7. Registration of a Foal born 2009: Please note that a new EU directive states that horses born from July 2009 must be microchipped and have a passport before the horse is 6 months old. Please note intention of the following change to IHSGB rules It is proposed that from 2009 the registration charges will be geared to encourage breeding from parents that have been presented at a Breeding Assessment and achieved a minimum mark, to be set annually by the Trustees.
